Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York City - November 2008

Submitted by Kyla Wilson

Hi everyone!  In November I had the opportunity to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  You know the one with the big balloons and Santa at the end!  They also have everyone do a performance in front of the Macy’s Department Store called Herold Square.

Saturday November 22, my mom and I arrived at JFK airport ready to start a week of memories.  We took a car to our hotel in New Jersey and immediately had to check in for costume fitting.

7 am Sunday morning we all met outside for our first practice, yes all 150 baton twirlers from across the US including 6 girls from Nova Scotia and myself from Canada.  Practice lasted until 2pm, and then we went to the Medieval Times Dinner and Theatre.  We were seated in the Yellow Knight section and he became our Knight in shining armour as he won the tournament and sent the flower up into my hands!  We then boarded the buses to return to the hotel for our 10 pm curfew!

Monday morning at 7:30 am we all met for practice again.  At 5:15pm we returned to the hotel to have dinner and I had a surprise visit from Jennifer Marcus!  It was great spending the night with a good baton friend.

The next day was a big day for us.  We had our dress rehearsal for NBC and we went to see the Radio City Rockettes!  But, first yes practice 7:30- 11:30!  Since we wouldn’t be coming back to hotel between the Rockettes and the dress rehearsal, we all had to wear our official uniform!  Red head bands, white turtle necks, black sweatpants and our red fleece jackets, AND carry the back packs we were given with our batons sticking out the top!  Now imagine 150 baton twirlers walking around Manhattan and entering Radio City Music Hall with batons!  The girls were proud to be members of such a large group so no one complained at all!  The performance was spectacular and the dress rehearsal was great!  Lights Camera Action!  After Dress Rehearsal we ran into Macy’s to purchase souvenir Christmas Tree Ornaments!  Back on the bus to our hotel and 10 pm curfew!
